What’s Palestine Known For?

In 1843, the first trade posts were established in what is now known as Palestine, Texas. Daniel Parker, a preacher named Palestine, Texas after his hometown Palestine,Illinois. By 1846 the area was formerly established as a part of Anderson County.

Palestine, Texas became the western-most stop for the historic Texas State Railroad. Today, there is a steam-and-diesel historic railroad museum operating trains that run from Palestine and Rusk.

Scared Heart Catholic Church is over 125 years old made from 675,000 bricks that were formed and baked on-site with mud that was carted by horse and buggies from the Trinity River and a ceiling that was built by wooden pegs (no nails).

The Eilenberger’s Bakery is one of the longest continuously-operated bakeries in the state of Texas a must-stop destination! The Eilenberger’s Bakery has fruit cakes, Texas pecan cakes, apricot cakes, along with other baked goods. They are a chocolatier with chocolate-covered nuts and other treats.

Old-town Palestine, also referred to locally as “The Hallow” is the older industrial zone. Here has many old buildings including the courthouse and The Palestine Herald Press, which is the oldest running business in Palestine still in operation and the third oldest newspaper in the state of Texas. It’s a spectacular 50-mile journey between Palestine and Rusk where you’ll see Dogwoods bloom in the spring or the fiery red of Sumacs in the Autumn.
